First convention announcement of 2011: SAN DIEGO!

San Diego – Comic-Con International: San Diego (Comic-Con), the largest comic book convention of its kind in the world, will open its Comic-Con 2011 attendee registration for four-day and one-day passes at 9 a.m. PT on Monday, November 1 at Comic-Con.org. In advance of the occasion, the organization today announced the first 20 special guests for its 2011 show.

Jordi Bernet, Dave Gibbons, Alan Davis, Jonathan Hickman, Jamal Igle, and Patricia Briggs are just a few of the special guests scheduled to take part in Comic-Con 2011. Four-day passes for last year’s convention were sold out eight months prior to the show, and one-day passes were gone by April.

“2010 was the fourth straight year in which we reached a self-imposed attendance capacity,” said David Glanzer, Comic-Con’s director of marketing and public relations. “With the impressive roster of talent we already have lined up for 2011, we expect that enthusiasm to continue and for the 2011 show to be one to remember.”

Comic-Con 2011 will be held July 21-24 at the San Diego Convention Center. Passes to the show’s Preview Night on July 20 were sold out during this summer’s 2010 convention, although more four-day passes with Preview Night may be released closer to the show, depending on returns or cancellations.

"Supergirl's Jamal Igle is Well... Super" Anti-Matter Extras

To All things.. an ending and a new beginning.

I just wanted to write a quick note and address the news that was released at NYCC 2010. Yes, Sterling and I are leaving Supergirl with issue # 59. The book however will continue on with Nick Spencer and Bernard Chang, who I have every confidence will continue what we started, so be nice to them, okay?

It's going to sound cliche' but the truth is, at least for myself , I chose to leave. I approached Matt Idelson about 4 months ago right after we finished War of the Superman and let him know I wanted to move on. Two years on a series as an artist is a long time creatively, and like any artist, you feel the need to stretch and do new things. There was no malice, no secret agenda on DC's part. There were discussions of what I may do next but nothing finalized. , including Birds of Prey. So when that news leaked out I was a little befuddled and didn't know how to respond to it and I chose silence on the subject. I know a lot of people were hoping I would take over BOP. Sadly when they would have needed me to start conflicted with finishing my Supergirl run. I'll get to work with Gail again one day, LOL.

I just wanted to say thank you to the Supergirl fans who have supported us during our 2 year run on the title. Especially to all of the Supergirl fan sites like Comic Box Commentary, Maid of Might, DC Women Kicking Ass, Too dangerous for a girl, Superman homepage and Living between Wednsdays for all the support and love. I'm leaving some out because as I wrtie this I'm on my way back to New York Comic Con for the last day of the show. I haven't forgotten you so please charge it to my head and not my heart.

Our work was not for everyone. I know there were a few fans who were proponents of the book when it started who've decided, in one case, to stop reading any DC title while we were involved with the series.

That's a little extreme don't you think?

For those people I can only say : you can't please everyone. Hopefully you'll come back to the series and support Nick and Bernard.

As for me, have no fear. I'm still at DC and an announcement about my next project is coming in the next few months. It's gonna be fun.

On a scale of 1-10? on what ...the Richter scale? Lol. I clean up pretty well when I want to, in spite of being a bit gooey in the middle. So i'll say "7". My wife says I'm a "10"

Have you every wanted to be a part of a writer / artist team like Wolfman & Perez, Lee & Kirby, Claremont & Byrne and if so who would the writer be?

I have. I've done it a few times with Alex Simmons, Sean McKeever and Jay Faerber having worked with them multiple times on different projects. It's a hard question to answer because there are so many writers I would love to work with like Gail Simone, Ed Brubaker, Paul Tobin, Joe Kelly. Pete Tomasi and Geoff Johns.
There are people like Sterling Gates and Stuart Moore that i would work with in a heartbeat. I think the opportunity may present itself but I couldn't pick one name.

when you became a professional artist what has been the biggest challenge/surprise that you hadn't considered before become a professional?

Time management. I don't think i truly comprehended the sheer man hours it takes to complete a monthly comic. Before I became a pro I had other jobs so if a page took a week to draw, that's the way it was. However, when you have to crank out 220+ separate illustrations per year and try to maintain some sort of private time and social life/ family life, it can be daunting.

Do you normally layout a whole issue before going back and tightening up the pancils, or do you do it page-by-page? Or maybe something else entirely?

When did you find your "style"?

Probably about 5 years ago or so. I did a little experimenting with a more blockier style for a couple of years after I returned to comics in 2001 but I think when I started working on Firestorm for DC comics was when my real voice came out artistically.

I guess you've "made it" when...

Someone cosplays one of your costume designs. This was a kick for me, I was coming down the escalator at the Baltimore Comic-Con when I saw him and had to have my picture taken.

Came to find out that not only is he a pro wrestler Eric " The Smoke " Moran but a major comics fan. We'd met previously but this was the first chance we had to talk and it was great to see the work he put in.

Of course the funniest part is when i showed the picture of Smoke and I standing together, Karine said" You look tiny next to him, he must be really tall!"

The popular artist on the SUPERGIRL series and the man who destroyed New Krypton in SUPERMAN: WAR OF THE SUPERMEN #1 comes to Dewey’s Comic City! His detailed pencils have graced many titles including Firestorm The Nuclear Man and Nightwing.

But perhaps Jamal’s most impressive achievement to date has been his work on Supergirl,where he redefined and re-focused the image of the character making her one of the most popular heroes in the DC Universe!

The Way back Machine 8:The really early years.

My buddy Steven Huie, tattoo artist extrodinaire of Flyrite Tattoo sent me these today after we saw each other at a mini reunion we had in Central Park.

These pages date back to 1986, freshman year at the high School of Art and Design in New York City. It's a character I created called "Crusader" the last surviving member of the Skatorian race. Skatorians were the progenitors of humanity. Earth was a lost Skatorian colony (Sound familiar?Thank you Battlestar Galactica, LOL) and Crusader was a low level shuttle pilot who barely survived an attack from the Deneb, a hive mind race of aliens led by a half Skatorian/Denebinoid called the Grand Architect.

Rescued from near death by the Skatorian Sun god (I forget what the name was but It was based on the name of a protostar in the Andromeda galaxy, I remember that much because even at 14, I was all about research, Ha!) He was reborn with the ability to control light, heat and microwave energy.

So I present six pages from "The Mighty Crusader"

Ok, yeah I know but I didn't know about the Archie heroes when I did this. I also had a Nightwing like vigilante called "Megacycle" and a Ninja/ Werewolf who looked like Corey hart called"Nightwolf"

As with everything I thought about revisiting the concept a few years ago.

Happy Anniversary

Four years ago today I met the love of my life, three years ago she became my wife, two years ago she made me a father and today I'm grateful for everything I have.

How I met Karine

I had been in a long-term relationship that ended in February of 2006. So I decided that I was going to just date, date for the sake of dating, which was something I never felt I’d ever done successfully. So I went on a succession of blind dates and hook ups, each slightly more bizarre than the last. To the point that I had at one point said to my friend Jenny “ I just don’t think I’m supposed to be married. Some guys are just bachelors all their life, maybe that’s just me.”

So one day in Mid-June, I was checking my e-mail and saw one from Match.com. As a lark I clicked onto the site and discovered to my surprise that I had an eight- year old profile on Match. So I decided to give it a go, updated it appropriately, and began looking through the various profiles on the site. It began a sort of a scattershot idea, seeing which ones attracted me and winking (a form of initial contact on Match). So as I was going through them and looking at a lot of attractive photos, yet there were only a few who drew me to them. I started talking to a nice young lady who was a medical intern, but it wasn’t really going anywhere. Then one day as I was checking my messages and going through the profiles and I see a photo of a curly haired brunette. She had the cutest smile on her face and this wistful look in her eyes. She talked about her love of travel and how she was looking for adventure. So I decided to wink at her, completely convinced that she would never ever talk to me.

Surprise of surprises however came because not only did she wink back at me; we began to correspond by e-mail, talking about our work and our lives and our families. This happened for about a week until we finally decided to talk to each other on the phone. And soon discovered that not only did we share a love of Comic books, Sci fi and fantasy but we lived a block a way from each other. After about two weeks of long conversations on the phone we set a date to meet each other face to face.

JULY 5^TH 2006

This day will be burned into my mind for the rest of my life. What could have been the worst day ever turned into the first step in a new direction in my life. My younger brother, Jean Michael, had disappeared and never made it to work. We were all in a state of extreme panic, except for my mother, whose unshakeable faith kept me from going mad. I knew I had made this date; I didn’t want to go feeling the way I did. At the same time however I need to take my mind off of my problems. I figured the date would last as long as a cup of coffee once she got a good look at me.

We had decided to meet at a local diner, Daisy’s. I got there first so I wouldn’t be late. She hadn’t arrived yet, so I decided I was only going to wait another 5 minutes and I was going to take off. Just as I turned to leave I saw this bob of curly brown hair walk past the neon sign and as she walked through the door and I saw that angelic face. Only one though went through my head.

We decided to skip Daisy’s and head over to another restaurant, the Park Slope Chip Shop. We sat and talked and I forgot about everything else in the world however that little bit of serenity didn’t last. I needed to go to the Bronx, to be with the rest of the family. I told Karine everything that was going on and was very understanding. I took the train up to the Bronx and about 10 minutes after I got to my mom’s place, Karine called to see if there was anything she could do to help. I was touched. More than touched actually. When I got off the phone, mom asked me who it was I said,” It’s this girl I had a date with tonight”. She said ”Oh really, what s she like?” and I just replied,” She’s nice, there’s something about her, I don’t know what it is.”

We started to date for what seemed like an eternity but was only a few weeks. We didn’t want to ruin anything so we decided on a three-date rule, which we did stick to. I t was the hardest three weeks of my life. Our first date was a movie “Art School Confidential” that turned into an all day excursion around the village, talking about everything under the sun and letting the conversation guide us.

We ended up spending every conceivable moment together. One night we were in bed and started talking about the future, about what we wanted from our lives and the subject of marriage came up. For the first time in my life I did something that took me by surprise even while I was doing it, I popped out of bed, dropped to one knee and asked Karine to Marry me. My only thought at the time was” I should just ask her now, because I can’t think of anyone else I’d rather spend my life with.” I was even more surprised when she said yes!

Karine is one of the most intelligent, talented people I’ve ever met. Her sweet nature takes my breath away. When she smiles she lights up a room and anyone who knows her and any one who has ever met her always says the same thing. “She’s so sweet.” She’s kind to everyone she encounters but brutally honest as well. I respect the fact that she says what’s on her mind, never avoiding problems, rather tackling them head on.

She makes me smile all the time, She’s funny as hell her laugh is infectious.

There’s gentleness to her, and at the same time she’s as rough and tumble as any guy. She loves a challenge, big or small. I’m impressed by her energy

I love her because she makes me feel weak and strong at the same time. She cares for me the way no one else has ever cared for me. When I feel vulnerable she always takes me in her arms and makes me feel like the world doesn’t exist. It’s just the two of us and as long as we have each other, we can accomplish anything. We can talk about any subject and never once have we been at a loss for words with each other. I love her more than any words I could come up with could ever properly explain.

What do i do on my first day off in a month and a half?

As soon as I saw the trailer yesterday I said " FUCK! I HAVE TO FANEDIT THIS THING!!"

i haven't done any private commissions in almost 2 years but I'm thinking about starting again in January. What do you think? I'm trying to figure out how to attempt this. It would have to be on a very specific, limited basis as in only inked cover quality peices of a certain size maybe 17 x 22 for $1000 dollars.
