I haven't done one of these posts in a while. Catie will be  THREE at the end of the month. I can't believe so much time has passed. She's the sweetest most vibrant little girl now. I'm constantly amazed. Happy Birthday, Knuckles!

Basically I came upon an idea the other day that led to this idea. I know people like to see the work we've done in the past, I certainly do as well. So for the month of April I will be posting a sequence of pages everyday, from my private files. I won't hit everything but here's where you can help. Jamal Igle, in many ways, is an artist's artist. Not just content to worry about page layout and design, Igle gets into his character's heads, drawing out emotion, personality and style.

And with a career stretching from comics to animation — and icons including Supergirl, Firestorm and most recently, Zatanna — it's clear that Igle is on to something. Just before he heads off to Chicago for this year's C2E2 convention, we caught up with Igle for the twelfth edition of Artist's Alley, where the artist spoke to us about his art school experiences, his technique for comic book composition, and just how character informs design.

Dwayne McDuffie

I met Dwayne at the first convention I ever went to. It was in NYC back in 1992. I had seen some promo material for Static in Comic Shop News and put together a three page sample based on the ad. I had figured out that Static's powers were electromagnetic. Now I'm not a little guy, but Dwayne was a towering presence to me, so he intimidated me at first. When I showed him the pages he looked at me, keep in mind the book was still months away from hitting the stands, and said, "You figured all of this out from an ad?"

I said, "Well it seemed to make sense." He pulled his glasses down a little and said, "Nice job."

When I finally walked into the old Milestone office on 23rd Street, I was 21, full of piss and so sure I was the next big thing. Dwayne took me seriously from day one but let me know that I still had a long way to go. Dwayne was always willing to help me improve my work. Every time I saw Dwayne, for years, we would catch up a little, trade jokes and stories. I remember Dwayne always being encouraging and always being bluntly honest with me when I needed it. He was a mentor, a friend and an inspiration to me. I'll miss him very much. I rarely cry, but when I heard the news from a friend, I cried. I cried for my loss, I cried for Dwayne's family and those who knew him best and I cried for the voice we will never have creatively anymore.

Jamal, how do you deal with some fans who tend to act, well, stupid, or the ones who badger you about trivial matters like convention schedules (like me)?

I don't mind the questions about cons and stuff, but if you act a fool, i'm gonna treat you like one. I also don't like to not answer questions here. I very rarely ignore a question. If i do it's because it was so out of line that I couldn't think of an answer that wouldn't make me come off like a psychopath, or it's something story related or spoiler heavy.

did you ever have a commission that after you finished you were surpised by

yes. Only because I wasn't sure if I could pull it off. I think my weakness is likenesses, I have to work twice as hard on them because as an artist your first tendency is to draw your own face subconsicously. I did a peice with a fans wife dressed as Batgirl which I was very proud of when it was done because I felt i captured her perfectly.

Would be a great choice to star in a Supergirl movie?

Ooh, good question. A few years ago i would have gone with Elisha Cuthbert. I would want her to be young or young looking so maybe Britt Robertson from "Life Unexpected."

How much does format and dimension matter to you as a reader? If a comic is a square format (or anything other then traditional) does that actually effect your reading experience? Enhance it? No big deal? VIva diversity?

Not really, the only thing that takes me out of the experience is bad panel flow, or a disregard for new readers visually.

The cover you drew for Supergirl 36 in 2009 is beautiful and intriguing. It makes her look like a 13 year old. It speaks of an innocence I've only seen with Mary Marvel. I'd love to see more of it. Any chance the character or art will linger on that?

I didn't draw that cover, that was the incredibly talented josh Middleton. It is pretty cool though.

I love that Rockwell/Ross look that you bring to your work. The nature of the Genre gives it plenty of fantasy and exaggeration. Thanks for giving us the excellent quality and expression of emotion that helps us connect with the characters.

Have you ever met a rookie artist at a convention, and found their work so pro level to the point, you helped or tried to get them noticed by your present publisher?

Yes. Chris Dibari who is now working for Top Cow, Steve Walker the artist on the graphic novel series "Sons of Liberty" for Random House. I've come across more than a few people that i've recommended for work.

Is there any particular writer you've been dying to work with?

More than one, Geoff Johns, Jason Aaron, Ed Brubaker, Matt Sturges, Matt Fraction, Gail Simone, Paul Storrie, Paul Jenkins, Kurt Busiek, Paul Tobin. it's a long list and it gets longer. I'm greedy, I want to work with all of the good writers. I've been lucky and have worked with mostly A- list writers my entire career.
