Interviewed by Sequential Highway

JAMAL IGLE ANSWERS 15 QUESTIONS WITH JULINDA MORROW

Jamal Y. Igle is one of the bright lights in superhero comics. His art has given breath to many heroes from both the Marvel and DC universe, most notably Supergirl.
Jamal’s pet project, long in development, is Molly Danger. Molly is a ten-year-old girl with superpowers who believes that she’s descended from extraterrestrials. Want to know more? Visit her blog, but only for a limited time. Jamal has plans to bring the Molly Danger project to Kickstarter in August, at which time this behind-the-scenes-blog will transform into a donator-only site.
A gallery of Jamal’s heroic art follows this interview.
Julinda Morrow: What path led you to comics and sequential art?
Jamal Igle: When I was five years old, my grandfather took me to see Superman: The Movie, with Christopher Reeve. I had been exposed to comics before that by my father but that was the first time that it really took hold for me.

C2E2 and "The Molly Question"

I just returned from C2E2 (or the Chicago Comics and Entertainment Expo) last night, I'm still a bit tired from the trip but I had a great time. I had an awesome time to be honest because not only did people come up to me to discuss their enjoyment of my past work, but many of them asked me about Molly Danger. I guess that means the word is getting around.

In the next few months details will be trickling out as we move towards the next phase  of production which will be fundraising. I haven't applied yet, I'm holding off until August, partially because I will be hip deep in a soon to be announced project , and some of the incentives I'm planning won't ship until December. At that time, this blog will become a  Donors only access blog. At that time we'll also be making a slew of announcements , including who our publisher and creative partners will be.

What I can discuss is the format.

Molly Danger is planned as a 4 book ,8.5 x 12 Hardcover Graphic Album series scheduled to be published beginning July of 2013. We’re planning on releasing the hardcover as a limited edition of 2000 copies which will retail at 19.99 USD. The books will also be released digitally several months later. Any additional funds raised for book one will immediately be used for book two and so on. The series is set to ship bi annually (Two books per year) and once completed will be packaged as a collected trade paperback.

I'm a-skewing the monthly comics format because this is format that I believe my work shines in. I wanted to offer something that is rarely seen in the American but the standard in the European comics market.

Now since you guys have been so patient, lets see some art!

Oh ,the places I will go.

Last night I read Dr. Seuss's "Oh,The Places you'll go" to Catie last night. I'd never read it, or at least I don't remember reading it, but I was profoundly moved by it. It was strange, but it's like a personal metaphor of the way my life has been going for the last two years. There are things happening around me, big things, personal things. Some will happen sonner than later. I find myself disturbed by the tone some things are taking in the industry. Darkness where darkness didn't dwell, bitterness for the sake of "relevance". it seems that in certain corners, there's no room for magic, and light.

it bothers me more than I can say.

This not to say that superhero stories can't be serious, or adult. However you can achieve those things without making them dire, and unlikeable.

I need to be the one to make the changes I want to see. I can only say "I" because my tastes only end at the tip of my nose. There is room for fun, there is room for magic, there is room for genuine good in comics.

I need to be the agent of change now. I've been moving towards it, now I need to step up that effort.

Oh, the places I will go.
